CONSUMERS VS. PRODUCERS
“When we can make as well as wear shoes, produce as well as consume, then we shall become valuable to society.”
– C.G. Woodson
The Mis-education of the Negro
In 2016, black families spend upward to 1.3 trillion dollars on consumer goods per year.
Nearly 50% of young men are out of school and work (data recently published by the Chicago Tribune)
Yet on average, these same families make almost 40% less than white families, which is a stark reality that puts into question how much our target community is producing versus what they are consuming.
FINDING A SOLUTION
In order to bring our young men to scale in a way that is sustainable, we have to rethink the way we prepare them.
We have to realize that the current model for post-secondary preparation may not be a good fit for them.
THE NEED FOR PRODUCERS
Through the Suiter’s Academy, men are not just designing clothes, they are
for themselves that feed who they are and what they envision for the future.
At the heart of every creative resides a true sense of self and the courage to think and act outside the box.
Individuality is our biggest asset and it is our duty as a community to ensure that young African-American men experience life in a way that is sustainable for themselves and their communities.
In the Chicago-land area, there is a lack of opportunities for young men of color to gain education and work skills through creative avenues.
Our dedication to young black men stems from research (Dr. Chezare Warren) that makes clear the need for highly curated experiences that are of high interest and high impact.
TEACH DECISIVE ACTION
The Suiter’s Academy is about changing the lives of under-served youth in Chicago.
Fashion, for them, will not be something that they just experience. It will be something that they create while enhancing their identity and knowledge of self. In the end The Suiter’s Academy is preparing students to interact with the world and transition into their rightful place – in the front row!
